Melee, Wizard and other licences

Will be interesting to see the eventual Kickstarter and where Steve takes his early fantasy work

Bashytubits04 Jan 2018 8:13 p.m. PST

We used to play the Fantasy Trip on a regular basis.

Anyone know just what happened here? Did Howard Thompson (or his estate, or something) come to the table?

Or if SJ gained the rights to any of the limbo'ed microgames?

I started with the original Melee and Wizard. grin

From a post by SJ shortly after the announcement, the 35 year clause in copyright law is what happened.

Dark Fable05 Jan 2018 2:58 a.m. PST

Awesome news! I hope he gets around to releasing and updating the Fantasy Trip system, perhaps adding some new adventures. I really enjoy these rules

I've still got most of the TFT releases and Starblazer (I think that was the name). Although I started with D&D my group quickly switched to TFT and never went back.

Editor Bill,

I still have copies of the articles you wrote in the early Space Gamer!

The Fantasy Trip- sounds like an homage to Timothy Leary.

Andy ONeill05 Jan 2018 9:43 a.m. PST

We liked tft. We played it straight and several of us based our own systems on it.
Then we moved on to gurps. Mostly. I thought gurps was way too complicated.
Went back to my tft inspired system for a while.
Then another design based on Feng Shui.

I play Heroes and Other Worlds now. TFT will be more than welcome as soon as it sees print. Revisions of the Martian Metal minis would also be welcome. I have a few and they're rather primitive but characterful.

I think the 35 year clause kicked in…
last I heard, Howard just won't communicate about gaming… His son did talk to some folks a while back…

Contrary to myth he didn't disappear.

Cool. I wrote an article for The Space Gamer using Melee and Wizard to recreate Beowulf. I hope Steve Jackson revives the micro-games.

Andrew Walters05 Jan 2018 11:01 a.m. PST

Along with Ogre Melee and then Wizard started my life on its course. I still have all my old character sheets, along with the first two editions of each game and all the TFT stuff *except* for Tolenkar's Lair.

SJ did specify that the Kickstarter for Melee would include lots of miniatures, so look for me to bring that to SF Bay Area conventions in 2019.

FingerandToeGlenn – I remember that artical in Space Gamer! That was awesome! I still remember your description of adding some evil mermaids to rip up Beowulf's silver armor…

Gone Fishing05 Jan 2018 3:48 p.m. PST

This is exciting news. I always loved the TFT system, and hope that in addition to this the old microgames make a comeback. My only worry is that they will be tinkered with too much and so lose their flavor.

I got my start in gaming with a Napoleonic skirmish game in the Dragon and Steve Jackson's microgames. Great games. Hope to see them back in production as well. Used to anticipate the next issue of the Space Gamer.

I used Melee both for Fantasy as well as historical skirmishing (a few Space Gamer articles got me moving in that direction).

I really hope Steve Keeps it simple and elegant – leaving the complexity to other RP systems

Whitestreak06 Jan 2018 9:43 p.m. PST

From what he's said on the SJG Forums, he plans to keep it the same complexity, just clean up the presentation & make it available again.

Sergeant Paper06 Jan 2018 10:01 p.m. PST

Nice. I remember the Beowulf article too.

Dark Fable07 Jan 2018 2:16 a.m. PST

Death Test, what a classic! Would love to see another version of this microquest.

It would be nice if they can work out a balance flaw in the original. Minor flaw, we still enjoyed playing it, and I used the engine for a Super Hero version.

We ran quite a number of Death Laboratory Tests: Fighters that started out with Max Dexterity lived longer and levelled-up much better than those that started with Max Strength. Max Strength characters died the quickest.
