Long ago I used enamel airframe aluminum as a base then used acrylic washes over it. It gave a good simulation of silk.

At least in my opinion.

So what is the best acrylic that gives the shiniest chrome/silver/aluminum?

I use Tamiya chrome silver.

I don't use acrylic. I use Testors Silver. As long as the base you put it on is dry, no problem.

one of the easiest products I know of is AK interactive True Metal, it comes in tubes, is like a wax and can be buffed to create a very shiny surface. Doesn't smell and doesn't need nasty solvents to apply.

For a brushable acrylic the Vallejo game air chrome is very good

I second JWebster's recommendation. The Vallejo chrome is nice.

You might try gloss varnish first and apply your chrome color over it when dry.
