In another thread I verified that I can use my 20mm WW2 minis to play Bolt Action in place of the game's 28mm plastic soldiers. If I don't buy a Bolt Action Starter Set can I just buy the rulebook in order to play? Or are there some other gaming components found in a Starter Set that I need (e.g. templates, status tokens, etc)? If so can I buy them separately too?

Thanks for your help …

Yep – you only need the rule book

You will also need two different coloured sets of dice

You could, if ya wanted to, buy the template that is used in v2 of BA. You probably at least want to get 2 set's of the Order Dice. You could play w/o them, but the OD make it easier.

Ditto on the order dice. They make playing the game a lot easier. I would play it as it using the same measurements and so on.

A willing suspension of disbelief? :)

Dn Jackson.
Amen my brother. But by virtue of being in the hobby I learned to do that a looooong time ago. H

Getting the actual order dice will make it easier. Otherwise two sets of the 15 of identical dice in different colors and then some counters for the actual orders would work. Something to represent pin markers. 1,2,3, and 4 inch templates. Use Easy army bolt action site to makes some lists, setup terrain, roll a mission, and away you go. I find the game plays best around 1000pts.

I just wote a blog article on this very subject blackshawgaming.wordpress.com/2017/12/24/getting-started-in-bolt-action. To cut to the chase you need the 2nd edition rules either as the hardback or in the starter boxes. Of those Band of Brothers is more use than Tank Wars. Absolutley everything else can be fudged.

I forgot to ask, where can a player find Bolt Action scenarios? Does the rule system use a DIY approach or does the rulebook come with some pre-generated scenarios? Thanks.

gbowen27 Dec 2017 10:16 a.m. PST

There are 12 scenarios in the rulebook, looking on the web for tournament packs such as Britcon 2016 (not 2017) should throw up a few more
