Went to see the movie yesterday at 8:30 AM. That's what being on vacation will do for you.

I've become a Star Wars cynic after all the terrible prequels, and thought The Force Awakens was just okay (give it a gentleman's C) Even so the FA began a process that is accelerated in The Last Jedi. It advances the Star Wars story by clearing away aging characters and actors of our youth while giving the opportunity for new characters and new stories to develop. It isn't a masterpiece in the same category as Star Wars (the original) or the Empire Strikes Back, but maybe the best since that second movie. I give it a solid B for its potential.

The story works, but I'm kind of a big picture person. I don't sweat the details. I'm also not addicted to the series, so don't have a lot at stake-just looking for a logical story that more or less connects with what has come before. If you're looking for something else, your experience may be different than mine.

Dezmond: "Admiral Gen'Dar Stoodies wears a dress as an explict rejection of the masculinity that wearing the uniform of the patriarchy would represent. Embrace the sacred feminine!"

Lol. That has got to be the best quote I've seen all year!

"Gen'Dar Stoodies", I love it,

Dan
PS. Cool clip by the way. That would have made a good movie. The first SW movie actually worth watching, as a grown up that is.

2 Interesting point guys made that I wanted to comment on.
1) I always thought the Imperials were modelled to be "British Nazis," but they definitely pushed them further "German" with the addition of the regimental cuff bands.

2) The whole feminist admiral thing was completely lost on me. Although she looked ridiculous (more like an actual woman Dame Edna!) if they wanted to be feminist then she should have been in a non gender uniform.

I hope the Rogue One people are the ones who write and direct the stand alones.

As an avid Sci-Fi gamer, I am excited about the introduction of so many cool new ships and look forward to the "Armada" models for them. However, I am concerned that they keep making them ships bigger and bigger that they become proportionately impossible to represent on the tabletop. Star Wars has always been about fighters vs capital ships. This last movie is going to make representing that pretty tough.

Bring back Ellen Ripley and Sarah Connor. Them,I respected.

Dezmond22 Dec 2017 7:52 a.m. PST

No. Sorry. Unacceptable. Too masculine. Both resolve their conflicts essentially by becoming men. Also their motivations are very tied up in hetropatriarchal notions of 'motherhood' which is very problematic.

And we have not yet even addressed the monolithic whiteness of you suggesstions.

I can sum up episodes 7, 8, and probably the yet to be made 9 at this rate which is Disney taking a giant dump on everything we held dear about the originals. They were not happy with only humiliating the previous heroes and what they stood for, but had to publicly kill them off as too worthless to keep around. But hey folks they weren't happy with just making a joke of the good guys they also made the dark side look like a ludicrous parody. Anybody care anymore who wins in episode 9? Thanks Disney for doing your best to destroy Star Wars!

Only redeeming thing is Rogue One which was great, but what they did to the episodes was appalling. Lukas Episodes 1-3 were of course not as good as his masterpieces of 4-6, but compared to Disney's 7-8 they were Oscar winners!!

I thought 7 couldn't get worse, but Disney proved me wrong by making 8 much worse and to list everything would take to long.

Star Wars can't be stuck in the past forever. It must boldly move on towards the future and evolve even if the original characters are no more.

Lucas said Star Wars has always been for the children. The new Star Wars from Disney isn't (nor should it be) our children's fathers' (that is, our) Star Wars. The linked article below makes some good points:

I know it's hard, but we need to accept this new reality and move on rather than sulk in simmering anger and frustration because the Star Wars we all love (or loved for some of you) is no longer what it used to be.

I know it's hard, but we need to accept this new reality and move on rather than sulk in simmering anger and frustration because the Star Wars we all love (or loved for some of you) is no longer what it used to be.

Seriously….

Rogue one was an excellent SW movie introducing new characters and advanced the SW world without denigrating any of the previous generation or it's ideals.

The new episodes could have chosen to start the story say a hundred years in the future with a completely new cast and spent the time developing the story and background of the characters, but no they decided to bring in the heroes of old and to humiliate and kill them them off or use as props further denigrating them as Dezmond and many other fan critics have pointed out.

So in needlessly destroying the old star wars pantheon what are we left with?

Ray- The heroine that we still after 2 films know nothing about other then that she is an amazing Jedi warrior and is so good in fact that Jedi master Luke didn't even need to train her after seeing her amazing lightsaber skills or even instruct her in the use of the force as she's already apparently a master herself. Oh and I guess her parents are nobody's so no need to fill in a background for her.

Finn- A trooper reluctant to kill that goes on a killing frenzy aboard Snokes ship. Other then that he's an ex storm trooper that we know very little about him.

Poe- Hot shot pilot who's supposed to fill solo's boots but totally lacks the stage presence.

Kylo- Hands down the worst dark apprentice ever and so bad I felt I could pick up a lightsaber and thump him. Your not supposed to feel that way. He's supposed to look unbeatable until he miraculously get's beat and that is totally missing.

Snoke- Supreme Leader from where? There he is folks and there he goes….

At this point there is no connection to the characters in the films. Instead of feeling how could Ray and the rebels win we are left feeling how could they not win against Kylobieber and clowns from the first order.

I could go on but I feel I made a point. They could have created a new star wars trilogy for the new generation without destroying the old and just could not do that resulting in a couple of soulless bad films.

I liked Ade Edmondsons character,

Personal logo Parzival Supporting Member of TMP23 Dec 2017 10:08 a.m. PST

Saw it with a friend. At the end I turned to him and said, "what did you think."
He sighed. "Long and boring."

Yeah, pretty much.

Captain Gideon24 Dec 2017 10:02 a.m. PST

I didn't think it was long or boring.

The movie blew. What could have been an amazing movie ended up being a total let down.

Luke's character was pathetic and just like Han, a total disappointing ending.

Why they kept Leia's character alive and killed off Luke is beyond me.

It's no surprise that Mark Hamill was really disappointed in the direction the director went with his character.

"I, at one point, had to say to Rian, ‘I pretty much fundamentally disagree with every choice you've made for this character. Now, having said that, I have gotten it off my chest, and my job now is to take what you've created and do my best to realize your vision,'" Hamill said.

I am quite certain that if the director had taken a different direction with Luke it could have been an epic movie. Everyone going into the Last Jedi wanted Luke to be a fighter, yet they got a sniveling pathetic loser.

For those that are into Star Wars Destiny, that is what Luke's character should have been like.

The fight scenes were terrible, especially Praetorian Guard battle. I thought I was watching something from the 80's rather than something produced today.

The Sith lord Snoke's character was so under developed and then he was just killed off.

@Dezmond.

Bravo, sir! Well said. You have nailed this ghastly film, and its makers, perfectly – and with exquisite wit.

Again, bravo!
