My first experiment was a flop. My usual method is to paint in a lighter color, then wash with brown or black, then highlight with the original color. I stared with Citadel Ice Blue then washed with Citadel Drakenoe Nightshade (blue).

Can someone recommend a good blue using either Vallejo or GW paints? I'm painting plastic 1/72 figures so there really isn't enough detail to use a "triad". I would prefer to use a wash to bring out what little detail there is but am willing to skip that step to get the right color. I'm painting to a wargamimg standard aka they should look OK in mass and be identifiable at arms length.

I use Vallejo Medium Blue and dry brush with Deep Sky Blue. This gives a good result without falling into the trap of making the Bavarians too light a blue.

I agree with Artilleryman. Vallejo Medium Blue is a good basis for Bavarian Blue.

Thanks. I currently use Vallejo Model Color 962 Flat Blue for my French. I use a black wash over it and it seems to look about right.

Are the shades you suggest part of the model color line? What is the bottle number?

Medium Blue is 70.963 or 57 on the shelf at a model shop.
Deep Sky Blue is 70.844 or 066 for shelf location.

Cheers,
John
