… 500 Years Of Swiss Neutrality. "In November of 2016, Switzerland will have had a strict policy of neutrality for five centuries. Even during the World Wars, Switzerland was able to be cautiously neutral. The only time it was really broken was the during the Napoleonic Wars, though the Swiss still tried to maintain their neutrality during the conflict and firmly reestablished it in 1815. This means that even if you don't count the full 500 years, they have been fully neutral for over 200 years, an impressive achievement. But why did the Swiss, feared spearmen who were used to winning against all odds, decide to pursue neutrality?…"

This glosses over a LOT of Swiss mercenaries for more than three centuries--always the best money could buy. Myself, I think they took up international banking because warfare wasn't enough of a challenge. |
