"Because of the sheer size of the war, many significant battles have become nearly forgotten because they a) were relatively small in scale b) took place outside of the three most well known fronts (East, West and Pacific) c) achieved strategic goals instead of spectacular ones or d) were overshadowed by larger battles taking place at the same time. This is a selection of 12 of the lesser known, but significant, battles and operations from The Second World War…"

Very true … especially with smaller actions. Almost everyone that has any interest in history know Pearl Harbor, Midway, Guadalcanal, Stalingrad, Kursk, Normandy, Battle of the Bulge, Iwo, and dropping the A-bombs on Japan.

Well I can see why little known if we go by some of the errors :)

For example #12 Battle of the Hague must have been the earliest use of the C-130 in a para drop operation if we go by the picture.

And #8, Battle of the Scheldt, mentions the Canadian, Polish and British forces but apparently not the American troops who must have been there, at least according to the picture with that write up.

I would also take exception to #5, Battle off Samar. The story of Taffy 3 is well documented and known.

As to these being "turning points", up for debate on some of these.

But, nonetheless, another nice find Tango!

I did notice that … and most of my jumps were out of a C-130, but in the '80s … evil grin

Disagree that they were unknown. Or turning points. Or even good battles to try and game. So not sure I get the point? Cheers.

Lee;

I would agree on the "turning points". Some may have been turning points of a particular battle but not the war. They were trying to grab attention I am sure. I think the line: "This is a selection of 12 of the lesser known, but significant, battles and operations from The Second World War." is a more accurate statement.

Fairly certain that the Axis evacuation of Sicily was in 1943 not 1944!
