bobspruster12 Dec 2017 1:03 p.m. PST

Khurasan miniatures would be the place to start.

Khurasan makes awesome xenos and colonial marines.

evbates12 Dec 2017 1:37 p.m. PST

Third one for Khurasan.

Depending on how much effort you want to put into it…chop up aquarium plants and base on pennies or small washers for plant life. Chop up a bunch of Styrofoam to use as rock outcroppings.

Check out the Khurasan ones I painted a while back:

Unfortunately, they were lost in the sludge left by Hurricane Harvey.

However, if I ever do them again, I will base them on round clear acrylic bases:

NOTE: Please keep us updated on your progress.

Dan
PS. And I would supplement them with Pendraken's xenos too:

I specially like this "juvenile" (SFC5):

Also, if you can get cholla wood online or at your local craft store, its what I was thinking of using for some of the walls in the hive section.

Cut in half, lengthwise. Use black or navy crepe paper with PVA (white glue) for the "backside", to fill the holes without covering the "veins".

Dan! That cholla wood idea is genius!

Cacique Caribe12 Dec 2017 11:41 p.m. PST

Wait, I haven't tried it yet! Lol.

Another idea I was toying with was to add a layer of clay or putty to the surface of a rolling pin and then use the cholla pieces to emboss their texture on it. Then I could use the rolling pin on a flattened "sheet" of bluish or purple polymer clay.

Another one of my as yet untried ideas.

Dan
PS. And I won't be able to try any of that for another month or so, until we finally get to move back to our house. If repairs go as scheduled.

Golgoloth13 Dec 2017 12:19 p.m. PST

Huh! Cholla wood? Huh…

Never heard of it/seen it before… Most excellent!

El Lobo13 Dec 2017 12:33 p.m. PST

Thanks for the advice and ideas.

vicmagpa113 Dec 2017 12:36 p.m. PST

good idea. I wanted to make a Alien insectoid ship. this would work.

Lion in the Stars13 Dec 2017 2:47 p.m. PST

Yep. Khurasan 'space demons' for the Aliens, 'mid-tech human defense forces in light armor' for the USCM, 'Defense force heavy heavy infantry combat vehicle' for the APC.

You're going to have to find a model for the Dropship.

Stealth100013 Dec 2017 3:42 p.m. PST

I have Pendraken's Aliens. They work great in 15mm. That wood is spot on.

Cacique Caribe14 Dec 2017 3:52 a.m. PST

Breaking and sanding the ends at irregular angles looks much more organic than just leaving the straight even cuts.

Spray paint purple, highlight with metallic blue and then do a wash with black. I think that should do it.

Note:
You could even glue pieces of corrugated paper inside so that the "ribbed" texture peeks through the holes. Just a thought.

These "Raptorz" could be added to the mix of Xenomorphs:

Khurasan's Space Demons are far and away the nicest 15mm xenomorph lookie-likees. They also make some nice Predator-alikes (the Huntarr) if you want to throw preds into the mix as well. I'd also second Pendraken's 10mm aliens as being fine for 15mm, particularly with older/smaller 15mm ranges.

For completeness, QRF also have a small selection of xenomorphs, pred-alikes (Skullhunters), marines & colonists. The sculpts are variable at best; I like the small alien bipeds and some of the Skullhunters, but YMMV.

GZG also have one pack of xenomorphs, but if memory serves I don't think they'd mix well with any of the above alien types.

For marines: I'm not a fan of Khurasan's, which look fairly cartoonish to me. GZG's New Anglians marines are fairly close in look, in terms of gear and body armour, but don't have any models specifically armed with flamethrowers; you could maybe modify a SAW or sniper to fill in.

Thanks again for all the advice and ideas, love the cholla wood as a hive system.Love also GZG figures ,but cannot decide which group to use yet, like too many of their ranges.

I'm thinking that I might be able to use my most organic-looking cholla piece to make a "stamp" (instead of a roller) out of polymer clay. This jewelry video is what sparked that idea:

I'll experiment a bit and let you guys know what I find out.

Dan
PS. I'm also tempted to order this wooden texture rolling pin:

Their hexagonal one looks perfect for more of an insectoid Alien hive.

You are a font of information Dan.

Never heard of Cholla wood ( looks like a cactus ) but if I were to use something like that I would use dried (dead) cactus leaves ( the ones with prickly pears kind ) as they have beautiful detail & can easily be cut ,glued & painted

Those rolling pins are great also ( another mental note to try to make some out of silicone or hot glue + a suitable rolling pin ).

Thanks for posting
