I'm new to this topic and would like recommendations for a general reference book please.

Not exactly what you are asking for, but, if you are a newbie to the period, I strongly recommend you to give a look to Steven's Balagan website. It is a gold mine of information for the Carlist Wars, especially for the first one.

Also worth tracking down a copy of The British Auxiliary Legion in the First Carlist War by Edward M Brett.

By the way, if you read Spanish I would recommend you "El Ejército carlista del Norte" by Julio Albi, and you can't do wrong with the old, but still readable Historia de la Guerra Civil, by Antonio Pirala. It was published in the 1840s; the author was a Liberal, so his narrative is pro-Isabelinos, but still it is very complete; it was re-edited in the 1980s; volumes II to VI are relatively easy to find. Problem is volume I. I don't know why but has become a rarity. If you can find a complete set it would be cheaper than getting hold of volume I separately.

We did a number of articles on the first Carlist war in Time Portal Passages back in about 2005

This is probably the best place to start:

I second 'The First Carlist War – A Military History and Uniform Guide' by Conrad Cairns (Perry Miniatures 2009). It is the model for a good wargaming book and will give you everything you need to get started.

Also looking forward to the Osprey which is due out in early 2018

cheers

I will third the rec for the Cairns' book. John is absolutely spot-on in that it is designed for the gamer. Overview of the war, uniform and organizational info, key battles with great maps of the battles and orders of battles for the various armies.

Approx. how many battles were fought during this conflict?

Contact Perry Miniatures. I sent them 20 copies before SALUTE.
