Hmm, I would have rated Quintus Sertorius as one of the best; against all the odds he almost established a separate Roman republic in Hispania & gave Pompey more than one bloody nose.

No doubt in my mind that number 1 is Scipio Africanus. He was a master strategist and tactician. Never lost a battle. Defeated one of the greatest generals of all time, Hannibal at Zama. Had the good sense to know his political limitations.

Second vote for Publius Cornelius. Brilliant tactics, repeatedly shown. If only he and Alexander had met in action!
