I am looking online for where sergeants wore their chevrons on the greatcoat. Obviously the upper arm was covered by the attached cape. The one reference photo I saw was a USMC greatcoat and the chevrons were on the forearm, just above the cuff. Is that accurate for the army as well? Also would sergeants wear their sash over the greatcoat?

The Revised U.S. Army Regulations of 1863 says this:

1577. The rank of non-commissioned officers will be marked by chevrons upon both sleeves of the uniform coat and overcoat, above the elbow, of silk or worsted binding one-half inch wide, same color as the edging on the coat, points down, as follows:

The USMC greatcoat was the same as the cavalry one so the cape was longer than the army infantry version. As a side note the marine one had a detachable cape.
