I am looking online for where sergeants wore their chevrons on the greatcoat. Obviously the upper arm was covered by the attached cape. The one reference photo I saw was a USMC greatcoat and the chevrons were on the forearm, just above the cuff. Is that accurate for the army as well? Also would sergeants wear their sash over the greatcoat? |

The Revised U.S. Army Regulations of 1863 says this: 1577. The rank of non-commissioned officers will be marked by chevrons upon both sleeves of the uniform coat and overcoat, above the elbow, of silk or worsted binding one-half inch wide, same color as the edging on the coat, points down, as follows: |

The USMC greatcoat was the same as the cavalry one so the cape was longer than the army infantry version. As a side note the marine one had a detachable cape. |
