Preparing to paint a 28mm Russian Colonial Force for Central Asia (and on to the Khyber Pass!) for c. 1885 using a mix of Askari and Eureka Miniatures.

What would be the right infantry flags for the period (Crimean War style?) and who makes the best ones for 28mm figures?

Thanks!

Terry Wise's "Military Flags of the World: 1618- 1900" has 3 examples of Russian flags from about this period. One has an 1857 pattern infantry color, while the other two are from 1883- 4. According to the notes the design of the infantry color was changed in 1883; the 1884 flag is from the "Cossack Army of the Urals". All of these are extremely complex with figures, Cyrillic inscriptions, and almost Celtic- style interlaced embroidery.

Not much to go on, but I hope this helps a little.

A quick Googol search turned up this site:

This contains one illustration and some additional information about the 1883 pattern infantry colors.

Clearly you can look at the earlier 1857 pattern (and check with Russo-Turkish War 1878-1879) and assume the new 1883 patterns were adopted slowly so use the earlier patterns. And we have some details of the 1883 pattern.

For more details, there is a Russian publisher ACT (AST in English) that publishes a book "Russia colours and standards turn of 19th -20th centuries" that contains details from 1883 through to 1917 (can't get the Cyrillic characters to display properly) link Lots of examples of Imperial Army flags and similar (including cavalry pennons).

As an example of the detail see this google search of book images link
