Outside in the real and natural world, away from all their artificial safeties, regulations and conveniences. Is this how some Russians felt when forcibly relocated from the cities they had always lived in, and were dragged out to live and do hard work on the collective farms far away in the middle of nowhere, beside the farmers they always used to make fun of? Come to think of it … I think I've also seen that exact same panic reaction when some people can't get a phone signal or WiFi connection out in the country. After the initial panic, they look totally lost and depressed, as if in mourning. I've also seen it abroad, when someone wanders too far from their foreign tour group, and suddenly have to deal with the locals one on one. And I've seen it in city blackouts too! Long time next door neighbors often end up meeting for the first time and share their grief at the loss of power, literally and figuratively. Dan

Actually, there was a recent study at some school back East(can't remember the specifics as I just glanced at it) where they took away cell phones for 24 hours and something like 38% of the group had panic attacks. Less than 10% said it had no effect on them. One EMP bomb and we will have zombies wandering the streets with their useless phones held in the air. |

I've noticed when I was in the Army. Some of the soldiers from more rural areas seemed to adapt and maybe do a litte better at least initially. When going on field ops, etc., … Of course waay back then we didn't have Wi-Fi … more like PRC-77s … |
Dynaman8789 | 20 Nov 2017 11:03 a.m. PST |
Them thar yokels WILL starve to death since they have NO idea how to farm without modern agricultural methods, for which modern transportation is essential. |
Choctaw | 20 Nov 2017 2:29 p.m. PST |
Dynaman, you seem to be a bit insecure about people like me. You don't think our knowledge of agriculture, stock raising, hunting and fishing (with places in which to do it) will keep us "yokels" alive? We don't have to have four-wheel drive tractors to understand the concepts and implementation of agricultural related practices. Modern transportation isn't necessary if for some reason we were to revert back to an agrarian society. Of course all you city people have to do is go to the local grocery store…oh wait, there WON'T be anything on the shelves at the local grocery store. Dang. :) |
Dynaman8789 | 20 Nov 2017 6:46 p.m. PST |
Choctaw – my entire extended family is people like you. Delude yourself all you want that the tractor you use to plow the fields will have gas or that the fertilizer you use will be available or that the game you hunt will be available in quantity to feed everyone who would be hunting it when society goes down the drain to the extent a major city would starve. |

Horse teams dont need gasoline and there are plenty of those locally, and guns and ammunition to protect them. There are even local stocks of dynamite used for surface mining in the area that can be used to blow major bridges to discourage mass migration to this area. |
goragrad | 20 Nov 2017 11:04 p.m. PST |
I was going to say that it might take a bit to get the horse teams together and the ploughs other equipment back into shape, but a fair number of rurals would still be able to figure out how to use them. And with a rancher running a few thousand or even just a few hundred cattle there would be not need to rely on game for a while. Frankly in the town where I am currently it would take a while to kill off the deer that hong out in town… |

I think the social statement being made in that clip from "Logan's Run" is that modern man would have a difficult time surviving if civilization collapses. Lots of people own guns, but how many have hunted and know how to gut a deer? Face it, modern man is rather wimpy but I'd wager that country folks are more likely to survive than city slickers when the ballon goes up. |
Legion 4 | 22 Nov 2017 8:26 a.m. PST |
I'd have to agree … unless one is an "outdoorsman", hunter, lives in a very rural area, had some training in the military, etc. Most will be at a "supreme" disadvantage, etc. |
goragrad | 22 Nov 2017 12:46 p.m. PST |
Actually a fair number of urbanites could survive given that the post-modern agriculture would require massive influxes of manpower. Transition could be nasty and the attrition during it would probably be significant. |
skinkmasterreturns | 22 Nov 2017 5:10 p.m. PST |
No,wouldnt take much time at all. I live in an area where the Amish still quite actively farm with horse teams, and Im sure they would be willing to teach us Yankees.Think about this too-once things began to settle down,we wargamers would have 2 distinct advantages- we would have a cool game to still play once in a awhile, and if push came to shove,we would have ready made bullet molding material. |
Legion 4 | 23 Nov 2017 7:57 a.m. PST |
We have many Amish and Mennenites near-by where I live. They should have a distinct upper hand in survival in many cases. Of course they may need protection from "the badd guys". So some of us with weapons/hunting, etc., experience and training would be of some use. |
BrianW | 23 Nov 2017 8:25 a.m. PST |
All those skills are fine, but how many of us (urban and rural alike) rely on modern pharmaceuticals to survive? Folk medicine doesn't fix everything, and it's been my experience that everyone forgets about their meds. |
Legion 4 | 23 Nov 2017 8:48 a.m. PST |
But regardless … some will survive … |

I live in deepest darkest suburbia ! But not far from some very rural areas. With all the woods around it is not rare for deer, rabbits, turkeys, raccoons, etc., to be grazing on our lawns, gardens, flowers, etc. Saw a 6 point buck walking up the street the other day. |

Are you sure you haven't passed thru a portal to an alternate universe ? Not at all. In fact, people at work seem to be being much less stupid this week. That would be a reasonable explanation. |
