Hello all well my French and English HYW armies are looking pretty good, although I'm still adding to my French as I write this. Now I still have a load of Foot Knights and some other Foot Troops that need painting and I also have a handful of Mounted Knights that need painting. Since the bulk of my mounted Knights(40 plus)are painted I need help on the others. Now some of the horses have Comparisons and others have Barding and since I'm not a great painter I'll need some help with that. One thing I need to ask is with regards to the Knights Lance/Spear,now I know that a spear can be painted some type of wood color but regarding the Lance or as others have called it a Josting Lance how are they painted? Now I've seen some Josting Lances painted bright colors like Blue and Yellow,so should I go this way? As for the Knight and Horse depending what type of Knight it is like a high ranking knight the colors on the Knights clothing(if there is any)and the colors on the Horses Comparison should be similar colors. Any help you can provide would be most grateful. Thanks Michael |

Well, there have been a few cavalry charges in the War on Terror… Now some of the horses have Comparisons and others have Barding and since I'm not a great painter I'll need some help with that. I've always seen the cloth covering for a horse as being decorated in the knight's heraldry, regardless of the knight's noble rank. Hard armor/barding I've always seen painted in metal. Not sure, but I'd use the knight's livery colors. |

Livery on barding can be hard to paint. Here are a few suggestions for decals. link link I painted up a Burgundian army. Metal barding, black base, dry brush, pewter color, then dry brush silver. Lances are in knights livery colors, some with spiral colors but these were not used on campaign, they just look cool. |

Lances in battle-scenes mostly seem to be intended as plain wood – see for instance link or link A few painted ones might not be out of place but the multi-coloured stripy thing is for tourneys and ceremonies. Horse caparisons (not comparisons!) are as already said usually decorated with the rider's heraldry, or with variants of it – see the second picture at link where the arms are three eagles' heads on the shield and banner, but the caparison is scattered with as many heads as would fit; or link where one Italian fashion is to have small versions of the shield on the caparison. |

wrgmr1 I went to the Citidelsix website and after I found the prices of the decals I tried to check out pictures of the decals but sadly I can't find any pictures. And GurKhan thanks for the correct spelling as I had no clue of the proper spelling. As for the Lance since many of my Mtd Knights have Lances in some Brown color but I have a number with the Josting type version of the Lance and what I have so far painted in one color so I'll continue to paint those which aren't painted yet in one color also. I do thank you for the info as well. |

I like lances to be plain, usually a wood color. But a fav unit of mixed "naked" and caparisoned horses are called the "Black Lances", because I left the black primer on the lances as-is. Another fav unit are all on plate armored horses, and the knights are all carrying jousting lances (and shields too, for that matter). I repeated the white and red unit colors on the lances in a barber pole type swirl. It was a bitch to paint but looks very cool. The unit is known as the "Candy Stripers" (not to be confused in text with "strippers", heh!). Keeping colors coordinated is always recommended and does suit the original artwork of the medieval period. |
