He's been in power for 37 years already?

Wow, I guess time flies even for all these presidents-for-life.

Dan
PS. I keep thinking of the guy offering Christopher Walken money at the end of the movie Dogs of War.

After reading the linked article, I now understand why some people think Bongolesia is a real place.

Don't forget that he has been a goodwill ambassador for the UN Health in the past. So he must be a great chap!

According to a friend of mine living in South Africa, it seems that Mugabe was forcing out all the veterans from the War of Liberation and trying to set things up so his family would remain in power after he died.

For some reason, the Zimbabwean Army objected to this.

If he falls, here's hoping he lands on something sharp.

@Cacqiue
Interesting article though hardly surprising. I'm still betting that at some point Chinese interests will find themselves on the wrong end of their own small arms largess. And should they cut off the flow to one of their African clients, for some reason, it would be interesting to observe if another, putative ally of China, with a knock-down line in Russian and Chinese derived defence technologies would step into the breach?

Mugabe is history, but I doubt his successor will be much better, accept on the economic front. One of the putative reasons for Mugabe's demise was that the economy has got so bad even the Chinese were stepping back…

Great War Ace22 Nov 2017 3:11 p.m. PST

I do not see Africa going properly, representative democracy anytime soon. They just don't get it. Most of the world doesn't get it. Even the places that do get it decide to not let that much power go to the masses, but choose something more easy to control. It's good to see things change, and we can wish for the better. But I can't hope.

Lion in the Stars22 Nov 2017 5:26 p.m. PST

Africa gets democracy at the tribal level. The problem is that all the nations in Africa are multitribal, courtesy of the colonial days.

Explodicate the Colonies back into tribal nations and you'd stop the 'civil wars' (to replace them with actual wars between different nations).
