"Has anyone tried gaming the large battles on a fairly abstract basis with 1 stand representing 1 brigade or perhaps 2 stands representing a division for the really large battles: could I do this with Volley & Bayonet or are there any other suggestions?" Yes. My rules "High Water Mark", available here: PDF link do exactly that. |

Our recently released rules seem to be what you are looking for. They are A Union So Tested, and are part of the Look, Sarge, No Charts series of rules. There are no chart cards. Each play controls a division. Game time to real time is about 1:1 in practice; although, some turns are longer and others are shorter. There is a yahoo group, LookSargeNoCharts, that supports the rules and a growing fan base. I'd recommend you give them a try. Buck Surdu |

From the Gettysburg Wargames shop, The Blue the Grey and the Butternut, less stands to move and plays faster, they can be used for 6mm, 10mm upto 25mm. |

My rules (see link in post on page 1) do that, are 1-stand = a brigade, and they're free. And you don't have to buy hex-terrain. |

Have a look at Polemos ACW rules. They have 2 scales (2 sets of rules in one book) in the 1st, 1 stand = a battalion, in the 2nd, 2 stands = a brigade. The stands in the brigade rules are 60 x 30 mm 1 behind the other,so a brigade is 60 x 60, but any stand size can be used, as long as it's to the same ratio. The system uses the base size to regulate movement and firing ranges. In the battalion game the bases are 60 x 30 mm, but again any size can be used as long as it's ratio is 2 x 1. I have used 40 x 20 bases for the first set and 2 together (40 x 40) for the 2nd. |
