What type of material do you use to cover the surface of your wargaming table? The first two are the commercially produced variety designated specifically for gaming.

a. Vinyl/neoprene game mat
b. Fleece/felt game mat
c. Large piece of cloth (fabric store grade)
d. Table cloth
e. Nothing (bare tabletop)
f. Something else ____________

My table was built to hold either a or b. It has a lip around the entire perimeter so terrain boards can be slotted it. The top surface is painted blue for naval gaming or to represent bodies of water when using the terrain boards.

My table is a large 8 by 4 plain wood surface with a lip

I use terrain boards with just a basic textured spray paint – green, browns, blues and mixed – gives and even textured coat without much mess

I use a pool table deep green cloth at the local library or on my table if I put mountains terrain on the table

I have used Sand for a sand table

I am considering in investing in a or b for a bit more variety

Because my table is four folding tables arranged to make a 10' x 5' surface, I placed a layer of those foam floor tiles on top, the 12" square ones. That gives a flat surface, AND allows me to pushpin a dropcloth I drape over the table surface for placing terrain underneath. Currently I have a Cigar Box Battle mat draped across the table, with appx 9"+ drape on each side pinned to hold in place.

I have a cloth from the upholstery section of the fabric store that I use when I need to cover a table that is normally used for other things. Several years ago, I built a folding tabletop for Saga games that is covered with green felt.

c -- fabric, usually painted, rarely purchased at retail (yard sales, second hand shops, and a strange place in Oakland that sells all sorts of things that were salvaged or donated)

f. Something else: a flocked cloth Citadel Battlemat. Best I have ever seen. I like a bit of flock texture for my Ancients battlefields, so I wish somebody still made them like that!

Cigar Box Battle mats. The selection varies for grasslands, European fields, desert, swamp, or river.

Green indoor-outdoor carpet covers my table. I rarely game on the carpet but use terrain over it. The table is 5'x10'

Indoor/outdoor carpet: green (most often), or blue (water or sky). I also use foam floor mats, the type sold to put on your garage floor, in front of your work bench. I have painted these: mottled gray (for dungeons), mottled tan (for caverns), and white with blue mottling (for ice/snow).

I've cut 1/4" grids into the tan, to allow 2D walls to insert to create a wooden fortress. Plan to do the same for the gray dungeon mats. These make a modular bulding system allowing any formation, or structure I need.

The painted mats are my favorite. The green carpet gets the most use, however, as open fields are the most common terrain type used. Cheers!

I use curtain material, and occasionally polyester sheets.
For X-Wing, proper neoprene playsheets.

Other than that, different things …

* Homemade Felt Cover and Bits (usually 2-3 colors)
* Homemade Terrain Boards (sometimes with tablecloth under)
* Professional Paper Mat
* Homemade Paper Mat
* Professional Latex Mat
* Nothing

B, all CigarBox mats, but I'm open-minded.

Both but mostly cloth based mat from Geo-Hex and Monday Knight. Apparently or so I am informed, I am the only person in this world who actually does not like Cigar Mats.
