"Syria's army and its allies have captured Islamic State's (IS) last main stronghold in Syria, a commander in the alliance claimed, bringing the self-declared caliphate close to complete downfall.

"Albu Kamal is free of the Daesh organisation," said the commander in the military alliance supporting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Not by a long shot. The caliphate may be gone, but we'll be talking about ISIS or an offshoot for years to come. The Philippines, Bangladesh, Yemen and several African nations come to mind.

It metastasized in 2016. So Raqqa was a symbolic victory, a much needed one, but most of the main bad guys and their cash left town last year for Europe, Africa and SE Asia.

Anyone with a computer and internet access can become ISIS.
