Great article. In the spirit of it, I will add a tidbit I picked up in reading:

It took until the 17th century for Britain's population to
get back to its Roman Empire numbers.

The fall of the Roman Empire produced conditions not unlike what we see in post-apocalyptic wargames.

I'm always entertained by the fact that Czech historians use the term "dark ages" for what we call the "Enlightenment", since their lands were heavily under the Hapsburg heel at the time.
