Recently picked up a light and a heavy Indian Chariot manufactured by Irregular Miniatures.

Both come with standards to be mounted at the rear of the chariot.

My question regards the types of standards – the heavy came with a pole with an ankh/tau cross at the top and the light with a pole with a classic Celtic/Roman boar.

Are these appropriate or would cloth banners be the correct choice?

Posted this on Fanaticus and was reminded to check the Armies of the Macedonian and Punic Wars section on Indians.

Note there that a silver boar was listed as an animal used on standards, which raises the question of whether that boar looked like the European version.

At any rate any input appreciated.

The only standards I've seen (limited to on wargames tables) have had umbrellas as 'standards'.

The Mahabarata describes chariot flags of the heroes, which presumably the author thought were at least something like his contemporaries.

From my scribbled notes standards include;

Hanuman the monkey-god

Garuda the mythic bird

night blue banner

'fine emblazoned flags'

a water gourd

scarlet elephant,

sun and stars on azure blue

one with moons, animals and lovely flowers

scarlet bull

boar on silver

bright flowers

stars

eagles

comet

oriflamme with palmyra emblem

'bright-hued banners'

jeweled elephant

black deerskin standard with water vessel

gigantic silver lion with blue eyes

golden moon device with planets circling it

vulture

golden furrow

Other detail includes;

freshly painted chariots adorned with flowers,

white parasols, one in gold

bunches of herbs tied to chariot to ward off evil

chariot draped with tiger skins,

Those are good suggestions (Thnaks David) and warrant an image search..

I may not add banners/standards to my chariots, but they will certainly be brightly painted.
