We have just released A Game of Knights and Knaves Fire and Ice 2nd Edition on WargameVault.

Like all our games the 2nd edition is free for all buyers of the first edition (just contact us for a copy if you're a first edition purchaser).

A Game of Knights and Knaves allows you to recreate both Historical and Fantistorical battles and campaigns set in the medieval period. You can create an army from your favourite fantasy book, television series, movie or, if you, prefer from history. A campaign system lets you and your friends take the command of a great house and battle for the throne of mythical Westerlands or historical England in the War of the Roses.

Starting with the Basic Game it features a programmed learning system with scenarios after each rule section. The Basic Game contains all you will need to recreate a typical medieval battle. After you have mastered the basics, the Advanced Game adds Crossbows, Longbows, Poleaxes and variations on armor and formation. Finally the Fantistorical section adds Heroes, Dragons, Mages and Undead, so that you can bring to life any fantasy setting with a medieval background.

The game uses a modernized version of DBX mechanics which allows you to fight an entire campaign in a series of linked battles in a single afternoon. This volume includes The Battle for the Throne campaign system and complete orders of battles for a campaign set in mythical Westerlands, England during the War of the Roses and an alternative history campaign featuring exiled Lancastrians, Spanish Conquistadors, the Aztec Empire, a Native American Confederation and a Viking Colony all battling for control of the New World.

The 2nd Edition incorporates all the feedback we've gotten from players after two years of running campaigns. Our heartfelt thanks to all the would be Richard IIIs, Henry Tudors and Edward IVs who have battled for our version of the English crown. Just as important were all the Lords of mythical houses that contended for the Dragon Crown of Westerland and even those intrepid New World adventures who battle both for and against the House of Lancaster's attempt to dominate the Americas.

Your suggestions and ideas form the core of this new edition (and yes we have improved Dragons….)

Next up is A Game of Knights and Knaves the Old World Edition. This will cover both an historical and a fantasy Europe starting with the Hundred Years War and expanding into a fantasy version with Orcs, Elves, Dwarves, Ratmen, Lizard Men and all the other traditional fantasy races that players have collected figures for. We hope to have this out before Christmas (it makes a great stocking stuffer).

Hope to see you all back at the gaming tables over the next campaigning season.

For convenience, a link grin :

Looks intriguing. I will pick that up later this month.

modernized version of DBX mechanics

Could you briefly explain what is the same…and what is different. Also, "standard" DBX basing for 15mm and 25/28mm?

Thomas Thomas07 Nov 2017 3:17 p.m. PST

Red Goblin (et al):

Modernized DBX mechanics: a total rethinking of how this method should work. Retain individual Stands (ne elements) and group moves but redo "troop types" to have less abstraction and more variety (so no more "Blades", Cav, Aux etc. – troops defined by function: Heavy Foot, Medium Foot and weapon "w/Sword", "w/Crossbow" etc.

Abilities defined: i.e. Shock: Destroy opponent on More (rather than have to double), Cry Havoc: Destroy opponent on Equals etc. Glossary of terms (easier to look up – think FASA style rules).

Standard basing: 25/8mm 60mmX20mm for Foot (30mm deep for "Fast" foot); 60mmX40-60mm for Mounted. 15mm: 40mmX15mm for Foot (20mm for Fast), Mounted 40X30-40mm. Figures: 2 for Light, 3 for Medium, 4 for Heavy Foot (which is also their Base Combat Factor).

Thanks Beast Rampant for link.

This is not a Crowd Funding – its up finished and if you have figures mounted already you can be playing tonight (the basic game is only 3 pages). All up dates are free (the glory of electronic publishing) so once you in – you in for life (well my life though my son plans to take over).

Feedback welcome and is used to fix/improve game. Questions answered and we hope lots of games played. Hope to see you all at Siege of Augusta, Nashcon, Historicon or DragonCon. (Or most any weekend in Atlanta…)

Having fun with it so far as is my 10yr old son. Just bought some more models to build bigger armies =)

MadBob:

Thanks feedback always appreciated (of all types). Had a great set of games at Historicon (taught someone how to play who had never played a miniature wargame – but was a big AGOT fan). Pictures on the DBA/HOTT facebook page.

Working on a "big tray" version so players can use the large trays of games like Kings of War and Song of Ice and Fire in Knights & KNaves games (adds attrition).

Is 'A Game of Knights and Knaves the Old World Edition' going to be standalone or an expansion for K&K 2nd Ed?

Thomas Thomas13 Aug 2018 11:44 a.m. PST

Bob:

I reorganized the K&K line. Now the Basic Game is just that the Basic Game to that you can add any Expansions you want.

Fire & Ice covers the War of the Roses in history, alternative history and fanstiorcial settings.

Olde World covers the Hundred Years War in the same manner esp. the now defunct "Olde World".

Earlier versions had the Basic Game & Fire and Ice in one package. But now all Expansions require you to have the Basic Game.

Next version will cover how to use Knights & Knaves if you have mounted your figures on "big trays" like Kings of War or Song of Ice and Fire (and adds attrition).

Thanks for the info, will be getting this soon.

cooey2ph15 Aug 2018 7:37 a.m. PST

I like the idea of less abstraction in the troop types.

Thomas Thomas16 Aug 2018 12:12 p.m. PST

The less abstract troop types allow a great deal more flexiblity in creating historical troop types. Your not just stuck with one type of "Aux".

We have Medium Foot w/Sword (+4 v. foot; +2 v. mounted) or Medium Foot w/Spear (+3 v. Foot; +3 v. Mounted) etc. etc.
