I have been looking for a turn based strategy game using a web interface. I don't expect super realism but at lest one that uses a historical map – something like the Sicilian Wars featuring the Ancient cities.

Can anyone recommend?

(Search engines just offer me flashy fantasy games)

All the historical computer games covering the ancient period that I know of are for the home computer. Steam allows you to play online for many games, but I am not sure if they have any turn based historical strategy ancient games other than Field of Glory II and Total War.

Role playing and fantasy are the usual type of games for web interface.

Most of the games that come to mind are RTS not turn based.

FOGII has a PBEM type system with a chat function so you can play a real time turn based game sort of. But again it is a PC based install first. You could try Slitherine's Order of Battle system as well (WWII).

Now there are several MMO style games that are web based but they are tactical not strategy games – "Holdfast Nations at War" is in testing. It is a Napoleonic first person shooter. There is also one on the ACW but again a FPS game.

There is an Ancients based game called "Tiger Knight" originally set in the Three Kingdoms period but now it has Romans as well. Again that is RTS – where you lead a unit of troops. Similar to Total War and not on historical maps.

It is not land based but Fighting Flattops is a turn based carrier battle game.

Rome II Total War sounds like what you are looking for. I play a lot of Medieval II Total War. Check out the mods for Rome as they make the game much more historical and fun.

I always thought that the Total War series could only be played tactically? The reason that I have never played games like Total War over the internet is that they tend to be quite involved. What I was looking for was something played like the web faces for Diplomacy. That is the game will last a few weeks but you spend no more than 15mins every day putting in orders.

Thanks for all the replies. It does seem that what I was looking for doesn't exist and that I wasn't just failing to think up the right search terms. That's useful to know.
