I am one of those who do not think the Spanish were all that bad. A number of times, the French withdrew closer to Madrid to protect it from other Spanish Corps advancing on it.

I think they make the Napoleonic period all the more interesting and varied. After all, it would be foolish in my opinion, just to concentrate or favour the victors or those considered the elites of the period. Every army and nation had their good and bad days. It is a bit like football in a way, in that good and genuine fans don't just follow a team that is always winning or in the top league. The Spanish are part of the Napoleonic whole and certainly cannot be ignored or dismissed.

I love my Spanish army 1808-1809. My favourite Napoleonic army.
