I found it quite hard to find a suitable category for this post, so I put it here for want of better.

Back in 2009 I visited Russia and visited Borodino. Whilst there I picked up this commemorative medal.

Unfortunately, I can't find reference to it anywhere and there are three things I'd like to know about it.

1. Was it actually cast from the metal of a gun used in the battle?
2. Can anyone provide a literal translation of the writing / legend?
3. Does it have anything other than sentimental souvenir value?

Thanks for looking,

James

While I can't answer your questions directly, it appears to be a nicer grade gift shop piece that was cranked out by the truck load.

I guess that it's just that too. From memory, and that's hazy at best, it was 6000 roubles (about £80.00 GBP) but, as my brother-in-law paid for everything on that Russia trip I might be completely wrong headed on that score, it might just as easily have cost 600.

The writing says "Pyotr Ivanovich Bagration".

I have a huge Kutuzov coffee mug from Borodino. grin Both your medal and my cup are souvenirs. I don't think anyone's melting down cannons.

On an interesting Bagration/bronze note, I was reading that the local socialists actually blew up his grave in the '20s to get at the metal in the huge plaque.
