Since the restraining order, I don't go to conventions dressed only in a lionskin loincloth -- oh, wait, you meant, "do I play games in the Tarzan genre?" I haven't played such a game, but I might if one were offered, perhaps at a convention. |
John Leahy | 02 Nov 2017 2:10 p.m. PST |
Yep, he was in my Darkest Africa Battles by Gaslight game along with Tantor and the golden lion. The Colonial player was upset that Tarzan was able to swing on top of the Steam Spider tank from Wild, Wild West. He took it over and destroyed it. Cool game! |
Glengarry5 | 02 Nov 2017 2:16 p.m. PST |
I put on games of historical Darkest Africa, I have a Tarzan figure and a Jane for that matter. But I've never played a "Tarzan" scenario because, well, I think it's silly. |

We have run Rugged Adventures games where the Jungle Lord is a participant. However, the player running Lord Greystoke must, in order to perform a feat of extraordinary spectacle, must stand on a chair and give the mighty call of the Great Apes-loud and with gusto. |

I've played in some games where he turned up, and I have suitable figures for him -- not a regular ERB-universe gamer, but I'll happily play in any such theme game. He's one of the great Pulp characters. What's more, I have had custom-made figures created for La, High Priestess of Opar, so Tarzan can have a worthy opponent! The two upper figures in this grotesquely over-enlarged photo:
Crafted to my specs by the folks at Hero Forge Custom Miniatures (the other two minis are Zatanna the magician (as per DC Comics) and the Red Ranger (an original!) |

Glengarry5: Tarzan is one of the first, and is one of the best of the pulp magazine heroes. If you think that he's silly, what do you think of the other pulp heroes, like The Shadow, The Spider and Operator #5? RudyNelson: You aren't into pulp gaming?? Are you in the right group? |

And why should the Lord of the Apes where "a silly hat?" Why hide those magnificent locks? Now, beating his chest might well be in order while giving the victory cry of the Great Ape. And all of which would be a lot easier to inspire in the average male gamer if first being shown a suitable photo of Margot Robbie as "Jane." Would work for me! TVAG |

People who think Tarzan is a "silly" character are most likely basing this on the legions of silly or bad movies made around the guy, which are virtually NOTHING like the original novels. My challenge to you: Give the original "Tarzan of the Apes" a try, if you like that maybe go on to "The Return of Tarzan," the second book that wraps up loose ends created in the first book, and see if you don't change your mind. |

Piper My favorite Tarzan novel is The Beasts of Tarzan. I love the image of the canoe voyage with the great apes rowing and the leopard sitting in the bow just waiting for the major scrap to come. |
saltflats1929 | 03 Nov 2017 5:20 p.m. PST |
Yes. Just last week. Tarzan killed my poor Belgian officer who was just trying to bring civilization and godliness to the dark continent. |
John Leahy | 03 Nov 2017 6:47 p.m. PST |
Yeah, I own and have read all the Tarzan and most ERB books in general. Some really good stories and Pulp action. I agree. Nothing like the majority of the movies. Tarzan and the City of Gold, the latest Tarzan movie along with Greystoke give a very different feel to Johnny Weissmuller movies. Count me as a fan! I mean just with the Opar stuff you have a lot of gaming scenarios! |
oldjarhead1 | 04 Nov 2017 5:50 p.m. PST |
Never played a Tarzan scenario. I have both of the Highlander Studios Tarzan & Jane sets. Wish there were more Pulp figs in 15mm |

The Shadow, Yes, "Beasts" is a very satisfying book (the third in the series). I suppose my favorite of all after the first two (which I consider one story in two volumes) is the fifth book, "Tarzan and the Jewels of Opar," because it has so much going on in it and because Opar figures strongly. This is the book I'd like to see adapted as the basis for a really GOOD Tarzan movie (for a change). It's got it all. |
