Bought a box of Warlord zulu miniatures for a RPG project I'm working on. I notice 1/4 of the heads have a tongue sticking out. I googled around to see if there was some historical reports of Zulu warriors sticking their tongues out and came up empty. I guess I'm just asking what's up with that.

Also: what does the pompom (not sure what its called) on the point of a zulu shield do? is it just decorative?

The furry material at the top of the shield is purely decorative. It was usually made from strips of some kind of animal skin.

I've never heard anything about Zulus sticking out their tongues, maybe someone else has other info.

As far as I know, the Empire's only native opponents known for sticking out their tongues were the Maori. Strange sculpting choice for Zulus.

No, I have never seen any pictures, contemporary or otherwise showing Zulus sticking their tongues out!

Monkey skin was common for headgear and could have been on some shields which were cow skin.

Never heard of Zulus sticking out their tongue. The "pom pom" was often monkey skin or other animal fur. I usually paint mine off white & wask with brown or black to pick out detail.
