It likely did carry a flag, but it may be lost to history. I do not believe the 9th PA, as a unit, wore Light Infantry caps. It is also likely that during the unit's history it may have worn more than one uniform. Light infantry in American units came, went, and came back again. What the particular company from within the regiment looked like could also be anyone's guess – and again, could vary from early Lights to later Lights. |

If you have been looking at Mollo/McGregor, then the "light infantry cap" was worn by just one of several recorded deserters (the plate description actually says this), and could either be a specific issue to a light company (even though they were not officially authorised until May 1778), or just a general issue of caps to various men within the regiment just to provide them with headgear. Looking at deserter records for 1777 and 1778, the uniform coats mentioned are either brown or blue, both faced with red, or "light coloured", although about half of all deserters seem to have either still been wearing their civilian clothes, or had got rid of whatever uniform they had been issued and found some "civvies" to avoid detection. The blue and brown coats seem to have been worn almost simultaneously throughout this period, whilst the "light coloured" coats appear from December 1777 and in August 1778. (The above all from Katcher's "Uniforms of the Continental Army.") |

Sorry, I haven't been able to find anything on what flag (if any) the unit carried, but I thought that this might be helpful to you:- link This indicates the location of two orderly books for the regiment, which may give further information on clothing (and possibly also flag(s)):- revwar75.com/ob/pa.htm#pa-12 |
