I am thinking of getting into WW2 naval wargaming. Does anyone ever play using the Topside Minis 2D ship counters instead of actual ship miniatures? If so how do you like the experience? It seems to me that the Topside Minis products provide a low cost entry to this hobby without sacrificing too much of the "visual appeal". Thanks in advance for your feedback.

I have the Coronel set and it is exactly as you say. Low cost, the detail is excellent, they have a free set of starter rules on the site as well as good support. They sell complete sets for battles as well as individual ships etc (you can download their ships/counters list as well). Lastly, some battles are quite large and it would be prohibitively expensive and time consuming to buy all the ships and paint them, base them etc. Lastly, if WWII or WWI naval gaming isn't your main thing, but you think it is interesting. these are perfect as the outlay is minimal.

Thanks Dave … given your reply does that mean you wargame WW2 naval battles using Topside Minis exclusively?

No, not exclusively. I have models for specific actions (for example, Channel Dash…..I have GHQ scale, but also 1/1200 scale, and use them for air and MTB attacks etc). I also have the beginnings of a 1/600 Coastal forces collection (right now for "Action Stations").

I was curious if the glue used to stick the unit counter onto the wooden base is long lasting? Do the finished counters last with repeated gameplay?
