Here is a photo of the Navis-Neptune 1/1250 scale model of HMS Terror, a monitor: link Robert |

I think modern navies--the USN in particular--could learn a lot by taking a look at these old monitors. Namely, a shore-bombardment platform doesn't need to be a multi-billion-dollar monstrosity; just slap a couple of big guns on a raft with engines. |

It's a lot cheaper to make a missile that fits into existing launchers (that you can swap out loadings for different missions). Building a monitor in today's world requires a hull with enough defenses to deal with modern shore defenses: 200km-range anti-ship missile swarms. Which means that the 'cheap' hull is going to need a billion dollars of equipment. |

Smart mines, wake homing torpedos, shore based torpedo batteries (mobile ones at that!) go fast and so much more would render a vessel like a cheap grave for its crew I think. Shawn |

They did, yes. British 1st Division conducted practice landings with tanks and cyclists. The Battle of Third Ypres had not progressed far enough to enable the landing to succeed. This will not stop me trying it as a 'what if' though… Robert |
