Can anyone give advice to a newbie about the "must have" Napoleonic Peninsular war book to buy, giving a basic overview of the conflict and if possible including information on Spanish,Portuguese and English uniforms,Commanders and unit formations. Thanks

I consider "Uniforms of the Peninsular Wars, 1807-1814", by Philip Haythornthwaite, a must-have. And the plates are awesome! It can be picked up pretty cheap nowadays, and is well worth the money.

IMO, if you're interested in the period/theatre, it should be a first-buy.

How about …
The Spanish Ulcer: A History of the Peninsular War by David Gates

link

It is good in that it covers the whole war and not just Wellongton's perspective,

Oman is very thorough. Expensive but the go to once you have read one general history. Horrible for uniforms but excellent OOBs

Military Dress of the Peninsula War by Martin Windrow is great. Also recommend Spanish Ulcer by David Gates.

those books are a tall order for someone just starting out. I would suggest this is a bit more realistic:

Mine is very realistic! grin Far from "the only source you'll need", but a great place to start.
