After Saddam's regime was toppled, the allies should have split Iraq into three separate countries. One for the Sunnis, one for the Shia, and one for the Kurds.

Yeah, gotta agree with USAFpilot on this. The US really screwed up on that.

Or we could have split Iraq into three 'states' that were then under a federal government, kinda like the US.

Because I'm pretty sure that splitting Iraq into 3 separate nations based on dominant ethnic/religious group would have seen a war kick off as soon as the US left. Iran invading Shiastan and Turkey invading Kurdistan.
