The exploration of Roman sites along the German Limes continued this summer with a trip to one of the potential sites for Aliso, the forward operating base for Roman expeditions into Germania Magna.

Fascinating, thanks for this. From your description of the reconstruction,it sounds like an experimental archaeology project. Do you know if that's the case? I haven't been able to locate much about it online--the EXARC Journal, for instance, doesn't seem to have anything.

Hi HvS, I think experimental archaeology pretty well sums it up although I can't say that the build was described that way in the English translation of the information boards. There were strong similarities with the build here to what they have done in Xanten where they have reconstructed the baths to guage the effectiveness and productivity of the Roman boilers to heat the water supply required. Here I think we are looking at, given what is known about the techniques of construction, how much material was required and how long it would have taken to put this sort of defence work together.

PB I think you are referring in your link to the Kalkriese museum rather than this site which is at Haltern and probably explains why I couldn't remember seeing any playmobil.
