When I was 10 or 11, I read Lightning Out of Israel, which was written by several reporters (AP, if I recall correctly). It had a lot of pictures, and was written in a pretty engaging journalistic style. I guess I remembered a lot.

Also, about 10 years later, I played the SPI (maybe it was Avalon Hill) hex-map-and-counters game a few times.
