We have played this over a number of evenings and it seems to me to be one of the great scenarios. Apparently simple but a great test of command with lots of difficult decisions.

Scale of models about 1/72 – ground scale 1"=10m

Board as in the pictures 4ft by 12 ft (two 6 by 4 tables).
Set up as shown in the pictures.

Hills- We used Maneouver group fold Flat hills for obvious reasons. Dead ground is 120m m (12") from the base of the hill wher LOS crosses it. Beyond the crest no more than 20m down slope from no more than 20m from the crest. The hills should be about 500 m appart so an LMG can reach the other crest but not rifles.

The hills have to cover most of the width. The big hill in combination with the nearby wood must block most of the visibility along the board Leave a gap no more than 80m (8").

Woods – The dark areas are hopefully obvious as woods. max visibility in the woods we set at the standard 80m.

Roads are good going to all vehicles, as are all areas except woods that are difficult going to vehicels and may cause them to become stuck. The river crossing is a bridge. Don't use anything too tall or too big.

Other than the bridge the river is unbcrossable by all troops.

SCENARIO

For simplicity we will call the defenders German and the attackers as Russian. You can swap them round an even change the period a bit.

The Russians must take the Bridge from the Germans.

Set up

The Germans and Russian troops set up their positions on or arond there respective hills. Hiddem markers with say 50% dummies to be used. The game then starts as the players see fit, off table troos comming on anywhere on their short eddge. Russians on the long hill edge and the Germans on the Short hill.

Forces

Russians

1 platoon dug in on or around/on the small hill no alternate positions. Realisticaly no further than 240m from the base of the hill. no alternate positions.
12 RPG's of an approipriate size (Nothing too special). allocated as the platoon comander sees fit.

2 patoons of air mobile infantry in appropriate air drop AFV's that start off table on the big hill end. This unit contains the force commander for all on table forces.

Germans

1 platoon dug in on or around/on the large hill no alternate positions. Realisticaly no further than 240m from the base of the hill.
12 RPG's of an approipriate size allocated as the platoon comander sees fit and one team may have an ATGW with 3 missiles something like a Milan. One of the teams may provide crew for this, but have their own personal weapons should they need to move out without the Milan equivalent. Note whatever you use, a Sagger is not useable as its minimum range is too long to be usefull in this scenario.

1 patoon of air mobile infantry walking on and 1 platoon of 4 AFV's we used TOW and 20mm cannon Wiesels. Both that start off table at the small hill end(4 ft side closest to the river). This unit contains the force commander for all on table forces and he may have an airmobile unarmed vehicle to travel in.

Discussion

This senario was run useing Maneouvre Group. I can say it will not work with Rapid Fire and its clones due to the logrithmic weapon ranges which create unrealistic situations. It may well work with other simulation systems.

The key here is that the long board gives interesting options for deploying troops.

I hope you have some fun with it.

What makes this interesting is that too few troops faceing the river could mean you are vulnerable to an attack from the other ridge.

The ranges are such that the AFV's have to decide if they want observation over preservation. Most of the time the vehicles will be out of RPG range but not MG range.

Links working now. What was the total size of the forces you used? I'm not familiar with Maneouvre Group.

Do I understand correctly that we have two platoons dug in on opposite sides of the river, and each will have an enemy airborne force come on the table behind them?

Dragon,
You stuff comeing on the board is on the edge where the nearest hill is occupied by the enemy.

Striker,
One platoon on the hill for each side. About 30 to 40 men with the platoon commander depending what your sides are.

Comming on table

"Germans" odds on to lose another foot platoon of 30 to 40 men and a platoon of about 4 light vehicels.

"Russians" get 2 platoons of 4 BMD 1 or 2 with at best 6 men per vehicle dismounted.
