I've notice in the Gettysburg cyclorama several Union soldiers seem to be wearing white trousers. |

Thanks for sharing this. I've read the author's older article about "drab" Confederate clothing. I'm glad that he shared some updated info with us. |

Yes, the 2nd Texas was issued new, undyed wool at Cornith just hours before they march toward Shiloh began. That's as new as you can get. Little time for wear or dirt, other than the mud on the rainy march to the battle. |

Another fascinating article on Confederate uniforms. I had previously read that some Missouri and Arkansas regiments wore "white" uniforms. Now that information is even more verified. So my 1st Missouri Brigade of Bowen's Division will be in white (drab) uniforms. Jim |

My buddy is painting troops uniformed like this for our large-scale games. He used the prior article as sourcing and inspiration. This is fantastic information for reenactors and wargamers! |

According to Bavier's book on the Missouri Confederate Brigade: Before the battle of Pea Ridge they were issued uniforms from the Texas penitentiary out of Tyler Tx. The uniforms were made of unbleached and undyed jeans wool. The men complained that when they got wet they smelled of sheep! The Arkansas troops use to baa at them when they passed by. In Anderson's book on the 1st Missouri Inf. the joke among the men before Shiloh was that their "white" uniforms were their death shrouds! |
