Good evening

Does anyone here use rank and file rules for 15mm Napoleonics?

If so, what size bases / numbers of figures per base do you use?

Regards,

J

I played them quite a bit. Four 1" square bases minimum per battalion, ranging to 6 or 7 bases.

4 infantry or 2 cavalry per 1" square. Two 1.5" artillery bases per battery.

Quick, simple rules with a realistic result. I do 6mm now but these rules will always be my favorite for 15mm. Bit now i am doing GdA in 6mm.

Sitting on the northern bank of the Caspian Sea – that'd be me. The R&F rules use use 4 to 10 bases to a unit (battalion, regiment, boy scout troop) after that, it's all free wheeling.

I uses 30 x 30mm bases for my 6mm figures (that way I can roll over to the more 'standard' 60 x 30mm bases that Baccus have popularised. That's 3 lines of 6 figures and another 2 figures on a 4th rank as file chasers.

For my 15mm's I use 40 x 20mm bases for my infantry at 8 figures per base (dense pack looks SO good) and 40 x 40mm for the cavalry, again 8 figures for heavy cavalry, 4 figures for light cavalry to give that 'open' look.

I've got pic's somewhere, but posting them to TMP is a pain, so not gonna happen. Sorry about that.

Thanks for the reply guys

I have a lot of bases that I can fit 10 x 15mm figures on (2 ranks of 5) – was thinking I might use those – my only concern then is that a 30 man battalion is only 3 bases and I might need to have 5-6 bases which is too many figures (thus defeating the point of keeping the costs down?

You can base in multiple ranks, but just treat each rank as a base for record keeping. I ve done that for other rule sets.

Have you had a look at March Attack perhaps. More corp based but bases for battalions.

I hadn't thought about counting each rank as a stand. That makes 6 stands per battalion which is more appropriate.

I want to use rank and file as i've used it for some time with my 28mm figures – I just want to transition to 15/18mm as its slightly cheaper and takes up less space (the more important consideration)
