Looking for suggestions for a figure to represent the monster in Beowulf. Seamus Heaney writes in lines 1351–1355 that Grendel is vaguely human in shape, though much larger:
… the other, warped
in the shape of a man, moves beyond the pale
bigger than any man, an unnatural birth
called Grendel by the country people
in former days.
Heaney's translation also notes that Grendel's disembodied head is so large that it takes four men to transport it. Furthermore, in lines 983–989, when Grendel's torn arm is inspected, Heaney describes it as being covered in impenetrable scales and horny growths.

Suggestions ?

Preferably from the UK, but for the right model ….

Gripping Beast has a Grendel model but its not very large. Ral Partha also had a couple of figures called Grendel

Ral Partha's Grendel is one of my favorite all time miniatures. My friend had it and I coveted it for years.

Unfortunately, it's on the small side of 25mm, so it might not suit your purposes.

Fenris Games has a Grendel

Nice looking model, but £35.00 GBP ? Ouch ….

I think that Fenris model has exactly the right look, but I don't picture Grendel on all fours. Maybe one of the Copplestone Yeti? link

Guthroth17 Oct 2017 2:09 p.m. PST

I like that Yeti. It would need a darker paint job but ….

Sure paint it brown with maybe a green, slimy wash.

I'm planning to use this Reaper Bones troll

I've been leaning towards this Otherworld troll

link

For some reason it just fits the image in my mind of Grendel. I'll be using it with 1/72 miniatures.

Reaper has an Undead troll that would be great.

I finally decided on this, from GameZone:

Good choice.

Yep. Good choice.
Pity the other trolls they do have weird stuff in their hands.

I use this one from Iron Wind Metals "Beowulf and Grendel" and the Sea Hag from Reaper.

I think there are some good choices with Crocodile Games, depending on what you want to spend.
