The left (East) wall where the golf shop was is now all glass and doors. At the far end is more glass and doors, and a restaurant is going in.

Some day, I'm going to learn how to work this site….

Poniatowski17 Oct 2017 12:05 p.m. PST

It is coming along very nicely!!!!

Moe the Great17 Oct 2017 1:13 p.m. PST

No one else knows how to work things around here….;)

Thanks Cleo, very useful info.

Will there be stairs, or a wheel chair ramp leading from the top of the hill, where the old entrance was located, down to the "new" entrance? Or is the hill being leveled out?

Will the parking lot on the east side of the barn be enlarged and resurfaced? Will additional Handicapped Spots be located in the parking area outside the Barn, as the few spots that were there are usually occupied by Vendors with Handicapped Plates or Tags?

capncarp17 Oct 2017 7:52 p.m. PST

Where's that big ol' boar sow with the lipstick? I think I'm gonna give her a biiiiiiiggggggg (wet, sloppy, tongue-y, tonsil-ticklin' French) kiss. She sounds like she even put on a few pounds in the right places!

vagamer63,
We hope you come to see the improvements that were made for yourself.
You may be pleasantly surprised with all the changes that have been happening.

We will also be using the newly purchased gaming tables during Fall-in.

Sorry TRU, but distance and costs are well beyond my time and means! Particularly when the show is all but over by the time the Vendor Hall closes on Saturday evening making the distance and costs pretty much needless.

You got a weird way of making friends. First you tell us FB is the last HMGS convention you and your friends are attending. Now you keep asking about the Host.

Are you asking because you genuinely want to know or are you just trying to stir the pot?

Disco Joe26 Oct 2017 6:29 a.m. PST

Since he has no plans on attending what he could do is just wait until people who have attended the con posts their thoughts on the changes. I am sure that there will be a lot of posts here.

I am sure whatever changes are made they are all ADA com pliant as it is the law. Any construction requires multiple inspections and compliance with regulations.

vagamer63 – why not call the Host directly and ask? Clearly they would be the ones with the information you require.

So the reason you aren't coming to Lancaster – which is only a drive of 3 hours beyond Fredericksburg, VA, and has multiple hotels/motels of varying prices – is because of distance and cost? Yet, you are mad as the con moved on from Fredericksburg, VA (you live in Newport News, VA) and putting the rest of us down for not supporting the con in VA? Oh, that is rich indeed. :-)

So what is the point of inquiring about the refurbished Host if you aren't going?

holien26 Oct 2017 9:05 a.m. PST

Hmmm 3hrs 20 mins on Google maps and along I95 and through / around Washington DC and Baltimore. (As of 17:02 UK time)

I seem to remember some people not liking the I95?

I seem to remember people not happy to travel that extra time and route to Fredericksburg from Lancaster?

Bowman26 Oct 2017 12:05 p.m. PST

Holien, no idea what your point is. Historicon wasn't moved because of the extra travel time between Lancaster and Fredericksburg. If the convention wasn't haemorrhaging attendees during the years at F'burg, it would still be held there. Plain and simple.

Bowman26 Oct 2017 12:11 p.m. PST

Since he has no plans on attending ……

He has already indicated that he and his friends have gone to the last HMGS con ever. It is understandable that his comments could be seen as trolling.

historygamer26 Oct 2017 1:26 p.m. PST

Funny the guy from the UK chirping in here on travel and obviously doesn't know the roads.

They way he would come up from where he lives (which is not Fredericksburg) would be the rather lovely and relaxing ride up 301 to an entirely different part of I-95 (around Elkton), then go up MD 222 which takes you right into Lancaster and completely cuts around all DC and Baltimore traffic. Nice drive. But that doesn't work going down that way to Fredericksburg from the DC area (which is where I live).

You might want to look at map before next time you chime in.

civildisobedience26 Oct 2017 1:44 p.m. PST

Ah, hypocrisy. The force that binds the universe together.

Just to be clear, if you're from Boston and you don't want to drive to F'burg, you're a whiner and a baby.

If you don't want to drive from VA to Lancaster, you're perfectly reasonable, not only in staying home but in expecting others to answer a pile of pointless questions you could call about yourself.

Is that clear to all?

Your point is? FCC was losing attendees. People weren't coming back. Not enough people were having fun.

Of course if you have any facts that point to the contrary I'd love to hear them.

Charlie 1226 Oct 2017 6:14 p.m. PST

Gotta love how warm and welcoming people are around here…. NOT! Lord forbid any of us ordinary people intrude on the "chosen" attending the "blessed Host"….

Bowman26 Oct 2017 8:09 p.m. PST

With due cause, Charlie.

Poniatowski27 Oct 2017 4:50 a.m. PST

ADA compliant… correct…. I cannot wait to see it….

Anyway…. what is always funny is seeing folks bicker about a couple hour drive….. when I have to drive 6 hours to get to the Host and almost 7 or a tad over to get to the FCC…. AND, that includes a horrible stint on I95 too. And, across Northern PA in sometimes snow and or ice….

For anyone who drives further… bless yer' heart!

Welcoming of what? Opinions? That's what the internet was invented for. Welcoming to the conventions? Who has said someone isn't welcome there? I must have missed that post.

"Lord forbid any of us ordinary people intrude on the "chosen" attending the "blessed Host"…."

Intrude? Of course you are everyone are welcome to attend. No one said you weren't. Are you reading the correct thread?

I think it's great the Host is being upgraded as it was a dump. No question about it. If it gets fixed up it would be perfect to host most of our cons. Not sure I like the idea of all three being there, but then where to consider moving to instead? Options are very limited given the current structure and attendance numbers.

I'd also point out that other clubs or people are free to build a better mouse trap too.

TheKing3027 Oct 2017 12:45 p.m. PST

I'm sure we'll see vagamer at Historicon. There aren't too many conventions the size of the big three.

As for Holien I can't figure out where he's coming from. I didn't see anyone complain the drive between Lancaster and the FCC. I saw complaints about the I95 drive.

Either way – you knew there would be someone that wasn't happy. But the way the numbers were dropping, I thought Holien would love the move to save Historicon.

Bowman27 Oct 2017 6:33 p.m. PST

Northamptonshire, UK, I believe.

Ba-dum-dum! I'll be here all week. Try the veal. wink

Ottoathome28 Oct 2017 5:26 a.m. PST

Looking forward to Fall-In. I have word several of my friends will be going who have not been recently, and there are a host of others who always go. Several of us have already planned a dinner at The Taj Mahal which has become a ritual for us, and have already hooked in on several games. Wife is coming and we are staying, along with several friends at the Continental. The Wives have already organized their own field trips to the outlettery shops and many of the guys are going to just to pay around with friends. Looking forward to seeing Bowman and The King30.

A topic of eager conversation will be the enjoyment of the non-presence of the snarky ones who do nothing but complain. We'll be sure to cat about THEM.

Well if that floats your boat…. Seems pretty immature and petty to most adults….

In the main, I agree. The place was on the verge of flat falling down. How far the reno goes to repair the short falls is yet to be seen (it is a work in progress, afterall). As to being perfect, well, maybe yes, maybe no. The layout is not the best and they could up their ADA compliance. But is it adequate for the current level of attendance? Probably yes, at least for the near term. And you're right about the wisdom of having all three cons at one location.

Will I be attending? No (real world duties intrude). But if I did, I'd have no trouble with attending the con at the Host (I just wouldn't sleep there. And there are options galore for that). I do hope replacing the carpet in the public areas is on the reno list; it desperately needs replacing.

In any case, to those attending FI, have lots of fun!

Ottoathome28 Oct 2017 6:34 p.m. PST

Dear Charles 12

Are you kidding? Everyone loves it when the party-poopers decide not to come to the party. They tend to be like Puritans at an orgy.

Bowman30 Oct 2017 5:57 a.m. PST

Charlie, it's the internet and that makes it hard for sarcasm to come through. Especially when responding to obvious trolling.

They tend to be like Puritans at an orgy.

I don't know about those Puritan girls. Something about those white bonnets is appealing. Can they leave them on during the orgy?

vonLoudon31 Oct 2017 1:19 p.m. PST

C'mon guys! We're looking like the media and the politicians. I am happy if someone attends. I am equally happy if they don't attend unless they happened to die. My satisfaction doesn't depend on if you come from the north, south, east or west. Just get here. Get here if you can. Free will is a wonderful thing when exercised IMHO.

capncarp31 Oct 2017 9:25 p.m. PST

Thank you, vonLoudon, for bringing our heads around to the important part of the event--getting there and having fun. The show is barrelling down upon us and we need to pay attention to these things to maximize our fun factor. Bring yourself, your friends, your family, your games, and your sense of adventure!

Got an e-mail this morning from the vendor coordinator. Apparently some of the work in the barn isn't quite done yet…:)

But he promises that everything will be fine. I guess I will find out in about 6 hours.

Double G02 Nov 2017 6:00 p.m. PST

Got here this afternoon; no carpet in the dealer hall, the main entrance is not ready yet, attendees need to come in through the rear double doors. My tables are in the back, which is now the front, so that's good, right next to Scott Washburn…………..and so it goes………….
