The blood and plunder stuff is kind of expensive, for the numbers I need, Who makes good cheap figures? Thanks in advance. Moe |

Old Glory probably has the cheapest figures. |

One problem: Blood and Plunder is very period specific. It concerns the period of Henry Morgan (1660s-70s), not the time of Blackbeard. The Old Glory, and indeed most Pirate figs, are the Blackbeard period. You need to be careful which figs you use, particularly for colonial troops. |

Aside from the introduction of the formal tricorne there's little in terms of buccaneer/pirate costume to distinguish the periods. Even from an armament perspective, the marine marauders evinced a preference for flintlocks from early in the piece. According to Angus Konstam they also favoured the old-fashioned bandolier over cartridges because their charge powder was less likely to be rendered useless by moisture. As Pan Marek says, it's with military uniform and equipment that the differences are more marked. You're unlikely to find any cheaper metal figures than the OG range, and at this point no one makes 28mm plastic historical pirates (hmmm… there's a thought). |

I agree OG is the cost optimum way to go, especially if you go with Old Glory Army. But, I have to agree with Pan Marek that they aren't going to blend very well stylistically. It's going to be like trying to mix late WWI Germans with early WWII Germans. Also, I think you'll find that OG may be a bit small compared to Firelock's offerings. There have been other threads in here regarding other size/style compatable lines, as well as others over on the Lead Adventure Forum. Personally, I think your best bet is going to be Eureka's Spanish and Portuguese conquistadores. Eureka also has a pirate line, but it's a lot of Turks and Chinese and women and zombies. They do have some cool accessories in the pirate line tho. Whatever you do, steer clear of tricorns. The 17th century was all about baggy clothes and big floppy hats. |

I get the impression Moe is looking for substitutes, rather than planning to mix brands. |

Some of the warlord games firelocks set might work for some of the blood and plunder type sets. And some of the 30 years war figures might work for the Spanish with the morions. If you wanted to go with more generic pirates, there's the new frostgrave plastic pirate set. link |

I'd second either Old Glory or the Frostgrave Plastics. I really like the earlier, somewhat more international look of the frostgrave figs but I think the sprues are without firearms so you'd have to supply your own. |
