Great article. The memorial was not damaged by artilliry fire in 1940. Elements of the 7th Panzer shot it up with heavy machine guns as they drove through. They also damaged a number of Commonwealth memorials in the area. It seems tour guides might be trying to be politically correct in the modern age,

That was my assumption – because of the spread of the damage.
