When I ordered this book from Amazon, I thought I would be disappointed. I thought it would simply be a compilation of Troiani's previous books on the American Civil War. But when I received it, I was pleasantly surprised. Much of the content is new. The book is divided into two parts: Confederate Soldiers, and Union Soldiers, with a very good study of Union Corps Badges inserted between the two. There are about 50 Troiani paintings included, about one-third of which I have never seen in a previous book. My personal favorite is that of a soldier belonging to Company I, 11th Mississippi, who wears a uniform made of red jeans cloth: Red frock coat, red trousers, and a red kepi. The book is packed with color photos of original uniforms and equipment (but no weapons), and the text provides valuable insights and anecdotal descriptions, such as "the pretty large sprinkling of blue pants" worn by the 61st Georgia Infantry at Gettysburg. If you are interested in Civil War uniforms and equipment, this book will be a very nice addition to your library. Recommended. |
