Hello All,

I am looking for some quick and easy ideas for square gaming tiles. This would be for space combat game and ideally 4"x4".

as a note, I am looking for individual tiles as opposed to a gridded map.

Are there any Home Depot or craft store tricks out there

Thanks

There are several options at home improvement stores that can serve as a space gaming surface. If I understand your dilemma you are trying to create a gridded surface of 4 in squares. Unsure of your total gaming area and how much work (painting) you are willing to invest.
Standard ceramic tiles are on the order of 4 inch squares, but these would be super heavy and more expensive than the below options.
1 sq ft vinyl composition tiles. Each tile can be delineated into a 3x3 grid of 4 inch squares.
Vinyl self stick tiles, mostly 1 sq ft each. Ditto on delineating the 4 in squares.
HD sells whole sheets and cut pieces (2ft x 4 ft and 2 ft square of plywood, hardboard and mdf that could work. HD will give you 2 cuts per sheet free at the store. You'll need to paint and grid the surface.
House insulation foam is available in 2x8 sheets in various thicknesses (1 in, 1-1/2 in, 2 in). Most is also tongue and groove edge so if fits together well and you can cut each sheet in half for transport.

The tiles from Fleet Commander Genesis might work well for you if you buy a set. I bought a set just for the minis.

What size are those Fleet Commander tiles?

Can you buy Vinyl sheets in black or some weird "spacey" pattern.

I've seen a 'black marble' pattern that might work, but that was quite awhile ago, and as to where…

Personally, if wanting individual 4" squares, I'd probably start with black construction paper, cut to size, and toothbrush-spray paint with tempera or other poster paint.

Laminating or gluing to cardstock as needed for thicker/heavier, of course.
