Does anybody have a reference on what the 8 inch mortars looked like in the 2nd Afghan War. They were used in conjunction with 40 pound guns. Also would like some info on how they were transported.Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

From Wiki:
Service history Rifled Muzzle Loading howitzers were selected by the Royal Artillery in the 1870s to replace obsolete smooth bore Mortars and howitzers, as they had great range and accuracy. They were only semi-mobile and were used by Garrison batteries of the Royal Artillery in India, drawn by elephants, or kept in fixed emplacements or fortifications. For example, by the 1890s Fort Widley had two howitzers on travelling siege carriages that could be moved to wherever they were needed.
Looks like a similar chassis to the RML 40pdr guns. |

LOTS – Thanks very much. So it seems that they were actually howitzers that were used instead of mortars in the 1880s.I had read that they were mounted on the the 40 pounder gun chassis but couldn't see how they go do that with a mortar. The howitzer makes much more sense. |
