I noted that there was a "Trier Infantry Regiment" in 1796 and I know that this was not an Austrian regiment. What uniform would this unit be wearing? Other infantry units were formed before or during this 1796 Rhine Campaign. I believe these units were disbanded after the campaign was finished. |

Talked with WargamerRabbit today and he put me on to this site for all things "Palatine" troops for the early period. Probably wore the earlier style uniforms and not anything like the newer Austrian style uniforms. link Great site. |

Important to remember that the 'Palatine' army did not exist as a separate entity in 1796. In 1777, the Palatinate (Kur-Pfalz) had been incorporated with its army into the Electorate of Bavaria. Only a few regiments survived disbandment or amalgamation with existing Bavarian units In 1796 all the former Palatinate regiments would be wearing the Bavarian 'Rumford' uniform. However, I can't see a regiment called Trier- so I wonder if it is not a Palatinate/Pfalz regiment at all….. |

Interesting question – wonder if it was one of the Holy Roman Circle Regiments? The last archbishop-elector of Trier, Prince Clemens Wenceslaus of Saxony (1768-1802), established his seat of power at Coblenz in 1786, but in 1794 he was forced to flee by the French. Under the Peace of Luneville in 1801 France annexed all the territories of the Electorate of Trier to the west of the Rhine and, in 1802, the archbishop-elector abdicated. A new diocese was created for the French department of the Sarre with Trier as its seat. The electorate's territories on the east side of the Rhine were secularized and given to Nassau-Weilburg in 1803. In 1814, at the end of the Napoleonic Wars, almost all the former lands of the electorate were allotted to Prussia together with the archdiocese. Another was founded in 1821 with virtually the same boundaries, but it was put under the control of the Archbishop of Cologne. From Knotel 1757 – …..

White coat – red facings … nice! Different cuff style – probably more like what the Hessians were wearing. Hat style probably similar … colors on hat probably the same. Thanks! Nice image. |

The plate is of 1757 so it is possible that the Kurtrier regiment had a diffdrent uniform then. The Kurkoln regiment changed from the shown blue to a white with red faced uniform. I doubt that the regiments of the kuhr rheinischer kreis were ever used in the field. |

Looking at Digby-Smith's "The Napoleonic Wars Data Book" it would appear that various Imperial troops did take the field or were involved in sieges. For example Blockade of Mainz 20 Sept to 13 Oct 1795 – Salm Solms-Braunfels (1 1/3 battalion), 1 battalion each from Pfalz-Zweibrucken, Bamberg, Liege, Boineburg & Reidel. Interestingly the siege of Ehrenbreitsrein 15 Sept to 17 Oct 1795 – garrison included 1 battalion Trier infantry and 2 companies Trier jaegers. Also 9 June to 17 Sept 1796, garrison included 2 battalions Kur-Trier troops, 2 companies of Jaegers, artillery & engineers. |

Ehrenbreitstein with Koblenz belonged to the Kurtrier territory |
