So, I'm contemplating some 6mm ww2 squad level gaming, but I have a limited space.

Does anyone play on a 2x2 or a 3x3 table with 6mm? Is that big enough for several platoons each side? Maybe 2-3 tanks each side with the appropriate amount of infantry?

I have access to a couple rules sets. Chain of Command. Played it a couple times in 15mm at a friends house and I like the game. Armor rules seem a little weak, but good non the less.

The other set is Schwere Kompanie. I've glanced through them and they seem a little meatier than CoC. Anyone try these at 6mm and that size of a game?

I will be playing solo 100% of the time, so I'm not sure if either game can be played solo.

Anyone have a pic or two of their setup?

Thanks

I had a 6mm table, but it fell out of my pocket, and now I can't find it.

Sorry. Couldn't resist.

Sure, no problem:

There is a fair bit more on my blog if you go through the WW2 stuff: link

So, yes, it is easily big enough for company-sized actions. Use a ground scale of 1mm:1m and a 3' table is nearly a square km, more than big enough for a company attack.

I have played Chain of Command but not Schwere Kompanie. CoC is a great set of rules but I prefer them as a face-to-face set rather than for solo player. I loved Troops, Weapons & Tactics too. TFL rules often have some quote interesting command mechanics, but I prefer simpler stuff for solo play.

I am currently using the venerable WRG 1925-1950 rules. I am not much of a rules butterfly, but I may get around to giving the Too Hour Wargames company rules a go at some point.

I hope that helps.

My old table although I am starting on a new ones soon. This time I will have a mix of 2x2, 1x2 and 1x1ft boards. And probably less details on the boards as they were pretty cluttered.

I will use the individual boards for smaller level games such as Crossfire and possibly CoC.

Some example terrain from a Normandy EPSOM battle refight.
This is x2 board sections each at 4' by 2'.

Terrain overview (bit of a picture merge and not brilliant):

AT Mines hold up the Armoured support:

Terrain mat is the new FOW double-sided grass and desert and is OK but has a few bumps in it. It also stinks worse than a runover skunk so needs a lot of airing before use.

Town sectors are 1" to 100m scale produced from Google maps screenshots, annotated in Paintshop Pro, then printed out and pasted onto mounting board.

Roads and stream are Timecast rubber roads and stream, which are excellent. You can cut them up to make smaller sections so get the things to fit.

Buildings are a mixture of Timecast, Leven and Mainly Military.

Big Hill is from Kalistra (hollow and really good).

Trees are from a woods kit by a railway manufacturer (can't remember which).

Tanks are GHQ 1/285th.
Infantry are Leon's Adler 6mm WW2 Brits and Germans.

I've only recently restarted 6mm, but on my 3' x 2' table I can get a fairly reasonable (IMHO) look:

We built a few 2' x 4' geomorphic boards copying the boards to Squad a leader. We'd put 2 together to make a 4' x 4' area, which was plenty.

The beauty of geomorphic is that you can slim them any which way & they will match up to make a new battlefield. I kept about 4 of them under the bed with a small tub of token houses & trees to put on the table (areas already locked out in green or grey paint so they were just Terrain markers more than anything else. The hills were sheets of foam core layered on top of each other, at about 1/8" – 1/4" thick so a 3-level hill was still under 3/4" high.

We played Spearhead, which also lends itself to solo playing relatively easily since you can write up your orders in advance & it is difficult to metagame once that is done.
