So if I am understanding things correctly with the Battle Forged Armies that I can say bring mostly a Chaos Space Marine force but I could do another detachment that is say Space Orks or Dark Eldar, correct? Now I know in the Chaos Index there are Demons, Renegade Knight Titans but what about other forces. I am thinking it would be cool to do a Gene Stealer Cult force as the original fluff waaaaay back when had a Chaos Gene Stealer Cult force. Thoughts? |

I believe that the rules for 'allies' is that each unit type in the indices have "Keywords" listed down at the bottom. For example Space Marines have the words IMPERIUM, SPACE MARINE, and <CHAPTER> listed there. A Space Marine army could have allies from any unit that hat least ONE of those same keywords. So Imperial Guard could be taken because they have IMPERIUM as a key word. Obviously Orks and Chaos and Eldar don't have any of those same key words, so could not be taken as allies to a Space Marine force. Not sure about your Chaos forces. |

Scott, that answered my question. Forgot about the whole keyword thing. Ah well. Still, in a friendly game if both opponents agree you can do what you want. |

I had thought elder and imperium were sometimes in cahoots. If so marines would have no choice but to side with them occasionally. I could even see marines siding with orcs against chaos or necrons for example. you cant always choose your allies. In that I mean, marines would not go suicidal againct 2 armies when they coukd side with one to defeat a more hostile or larger threat. |

Well, in friendly games you setup you can do anything you like. The restrictions in the army lists are for tournaments and such. |

Now H Man brings up an interesting narrative. At what point would certain forces actually ally with each other? Our own real world history is full of strange bedfellows. I would think most any of the 40K races would under the right circumstances team up against the Nids. Is it even possible to negotiate with Nids? I would think not. Chaos whether Heretic Astartes or A Democratic force would be hard pressed to ally with anything other than other Chaos forces. Actually the Orks might join with a Chaos Space Marine force simply for the chance to fight but keep one eye looking over their green shoulders for treachery. Thoughts? |
