I read a couple books from a trilogy or series of books in the late 1980s.

The story was about a group of villages that were being invaded by raiders. They escaped by following a river downstream and settling in another area. They then were trying to get back to their lands.

Couldn't ever find the last book, so didn't see how it ended.

I think the author's last name started with a Y or Z

Maybe something by Zelazney?

Not a Zelazny I know of and I think I got pretty much all he wrote.

Thought maybe Chelsea Quinn Yarbro but don't see anything like that in her lists.

I do seem to remember a female author writing something along those lines at that time though.

Ursula Le Guin did a series that sounds similar to that.

I thought I remembered something like that from Patricia A. McKillip, but it's been so long ago I don't recall.

The only ones I can think if associated with your letters are Jane Yolen and Mario Zimmer Bradley.

Perhaps Diana Wynne Jones' Dalemark Quartet.

First book (chronology) is The Spellcoats which tells of an invasion and the effort to retake the lost land -

Didn't see anything in Yolen's bibliography to match the scenario and don't remember anything like it in Bradley's.

Well,if we keep going, we'll eventually work our way through the alphabet. . .
