First off Tango… maybe due to being 'late' to find this, but the link only came up "Not Found".

However Ive seen this on WL Games, IIRC it did 'not' specifically say it, but I'm pretty sure the lanterns are to give the players the option of having 3D Objective markers rather than the simple tokens which come with the game.

I gotta say.. I like, and the Katana ruler's, ROCK!
