Can anyone recommend small skirmish rules for Vikings? I guess I have 100 to 125 figs . Mostly Vikings but some Saxons and Norman misc figs also. Also some ancient German types that could pass for Vikings.

It would be appreciated.

Thank you.

What scale are you looking for?

And, have you tried Saga? Great skirmish rules for 28mm, though the forces max out around 72 figs per side. Smallest 6 pt warband would be 25 figures.

Battle Troll is a fun game but may be a little small for you. I'm enjoying Saga lately.

Saga is fun and popular right now. I like to think of it as a ship's crew. My usual Viking army is 41 strong: a warlord, eight hearthguard (armored warriors), 16 hersir (unarmored warriors), four berserkers, and 12 archers. As noted, armies can range from 25 (all elite) to 72 (all peasants with little experience or training) or so figures.

battle Troll is fun, and historically based more on the Icelandic sagas. It has been a couple years, but I think you needed 5-10 figures per side. It provides a chance for our Vikings to fight each other.

Pig Wars is an older set of rules, and is available through the Pig Wars Yahoo group. We've played games with three 20 man bands on each side, each band run by one player.

Blood Eagle is fairly new; I've only played it once. I believe each player runs a band of 5-10 figures. It has army lists that include fantasy armies as well as historical.

Finally, people do use Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit. Again, it can be used for both fantasy and historical warbands.

Sounds like you have figures for 2 or 3 Saga armies.

That's how I started playing Saga. I had a "Warrior" /
"7th Edition" Norman army of 125 or so figures which broke down into Norman and Welsh perfectly.

I could not find anyone to play Warrior and the DBX's just weren't my thing. I don't care where you live… someone near to you plays Saga!

Dux Bellorum (Osprey) or Dux Britanniarum (TooFatLardies) as well.

Check out the new rules from Two Hour Wargames, "Great Hall Burning".

Dux Bellorum would be my choice; if you have the figures, you only need to buy the rule book. Saga needs a bigger outlay on book, boards and dice, although I have enjoyed the few games I have played.

Lion Rampant is another choice, there is an official dark age mod on Dan Mersey's blog.

28mm. Great suggestions so far.

Thank you.

Peter Pig's "Longships" about 100 figures per side.

Another vote for adapting Lion Rampant. 👍🏼
Especially if you have a multiplayer set up.

Saga is better for just 2, more intense- but you are tied to their dice and characteristics.

Dux Bellorum is neither 'small skirmish rules' nor 'for Vikings'.

OneHuaiTicket10 Sep 2017 4:37 p.m. PST

Valhalla by East Street Games is fast and fun. Around 12 warriors per side, arranged in "benches" of 3-8 men. Cool online aspect if you choose to use it. I really like this game.
Age of Blood is still my favorite. Really hard to beat all around.

Tribal (available on Wargames Vault) – very interesting card based mechanics.

I would second both Saga and Blood Eagle. Not actually played Blood Eagle yet but I've got the rules and they read well. Definitely geared more towards very small skirmishes! One for stuffing the table full of terrain, anyway.

Saga is fun as well- the battle board makes for a really interesting angle.

Either way I'd recommend sticking Wardruna on for some background music.
