I've recently realised i read books the same way I watch tv shows. I usually have sevral books going at once. 4 at this moment. I read a decent chuck in obe than for a week or two read another before coming back etc. How do you read books?

GurKhan08 Sep 2017 3:56 a.m. PST

At least two on the go at a time, one fiction and one history; often more (one fiction and two historical at the moment). But I'm more likely to read bits of two or more in the same day than stick to one for a week or so.

basileus6608 Sep 2017 4:14 a.m. PST

It depends, but my usual output is two or three at the same time.

rustymusket08 Sep 2017 4:43 a.m. PST

I usually have 2 or 3 going. Sometimes I will be indecisive and pick up a book, read part way and realize I am not interested and move to a different book. If that does not work, I paint figs or set up a battle scene or walk the dogs.

Two modes. Normal is as several of the others--two or three at a time, usually one non-fiction (usually history) and one fiction, but in any event very far apart.

But sometimes I'll stack up everything on a particular battle or campaign--battle histories, unit histories, biographies, what have you--and do the lot at once. This is not relaxing--but it does give you those wonderful moments when you discover some historian has simply stated something as fact which he can't prove.

redbanner414508 Sep 2017 5:36 a.m. PST

One fiction and one to three histories simultaneously.

Irish Marine08 Sep 2017 5:48 a.m. PST

Two at least, read a little of the first go to the second and back again. Also I read the end first if it's fiction to see if it's any good.

KSmyth08 Sep 2017 6:06 a.m. PST

One. I'm too linear and like to get from beginning to end before starting something else.

Dwindling Gravitas08 Sep 2017 6:36 a.m. PST

Ditto KSmyth.

And we're not "linear". We're simply "focused" … :-)

jdpintex08 Sep 2017 6:36 a.m. PST

One at a time

skipper John08 Sep 2017 6:42 a.m. PST

One at a time. Unless it is some dry historical thing I simply want to glean information from, then 2.

Left to right, top to bottom.

Seriously, I try not to have more than one fiction book going at a time, but I have any number of non-fiction books in varying stages of completion.

Exceptions occur – at the moment, I have Stephen King's It going along with Swan Song. I have no problem keeping content separate.

Joes Shop Supporting Member of TMP08 Sep 2017 6:59 a.m. PST

Usually two at a time.

Frederick Supporting Member of TMP08 Sep 2017 7:11 a.m. PST

Usually two at a time – right now three

That is for non-fiction; for fiction I tend to power thru them pretty quickly

10mm Wargaming08 Sep 2017 7:14 a.m. PST

Yep I'm definitely a one person book at a time

Take care

Andy

No pattern as to the number I am reading. Currently have 4 being read which is a bit high. As to genre, 60% SF, 30% historical, 10% a mix of westerns, classics and, mystery novels.

Books are like printouts that are bound at the edge instead of stapled in the corner, right?

Great War Ace08 Sep 2017 7:39 a.m. PST

It has changed. During my high point in reading (the 90s mainly) I would have as many as six books going, mostly non fiction. Now I do most of my reading online (which I find ironic and annoying, and unexpected: I had thought, before 'puters invaded my life, that staring at a screen would make me tired, but the opposite occurred: a lighted screen keeps me awake far better than a printed page, Grrr!), and usually only have one "bedtime" book going. Most nights I get through less than a page before I fall asleep.

coryfromMissoula08 Sep 2017 9:29 a.m. PST

I tend to have two or three non fiction going at the same time and take a couple of weeks to read each one, getting in only short reading sessions. In between I often look up mentioned side events or persons.

Fiction on the other hand I rarely read without reading the book straight through, preferably in a single sitting. As a result I tend to save fiction for when I am ill.

Audio books, so one at a time. So that way I can be doing something else at the same time.

I generally read one page at a time, hopefully with my eyes open.

DeRuyter08 Sep 2017 10:30 a.m. PST

Usually 2-3 – one fiction on kindle, one history on kindle and maybe another reference type history selection in print.

Disco Joe08 Sep 2017 12:01 p.m. PST

One at a time.

14Bore08 Sep 2017 12:15 p.m. PST

Just started at two at a time but normally one at a time.

goragrad08 Sep 2017 1:16 p.m. PST

Generally one.

Of course while reading that one hardcopy I bounce around on the computer/web and may spend more time reading on it.

Ragbones08 Sep 2017 1:44 p.m. PST

If it's a good book that holds my interest then one at a time. Sometimes, though, I bounce between a couple that are less compelling individually.

One at a time for me too!

Dynaman878909 Sep 2017 5:56 a.m. PST

One at a time.

Chuckaroobob09 Sep 2017 9:21 a.m. PST

One at a time. Usually in bed before going to sleep, but other times too. About one book per week.

rmaker09 Sep 2017 9:40 a.m. PST

At least two at a time.

wrgmr109 Sep 2017 11:49 a.m. PST

I'm with many of you, one at a time.
Just finished "With The Old Breed" by E.B. Sledge, highly recommended!

Personal logo etotheipi Sponsoring Member of TMP10 Sep 2017 4:14 a.m. PST

One at a time. Then I buy a new one tomorrow.

I usually bring a bound printout on a long airplane flight, but lately, the movie and tv options have been good enough to distract me from reading. I guess that's still a low bar.

Lately, I've seen the miniseries Kampen om Tungt Vannet and The Night Manager on long flights.
